Perhaps we could set up a time where anyone who has relocated to the tropics can share their experiences of Immigration/Visa, culture shock, weather/climate, wildlife, real estate, shopping, health care, infrastructure, diseases/vaccinations, etc etc...
I for one would like some first hand accounts of what it was like! Of course that depends on whether someone who has moved would be motivated to leave their home... :)

We'll seriously consider someone if we can find someone who can present a high quality presentation.
If you know anyone, send them our way to discuss further! Or maybe you'll do it and come back in 2013 and give a lecture :)
Permalink Reply by Robert Fulop on January 18, 2012 at 11:55pm I'll do it next year for sure!
Even if you don't find anyone for this year, we could do a workshop/open discussion where we can share ideas.
The past year I did a lot of research on the subject and I would be happy to share it with others, I know a lot of us fruity people are interested in this, we talked about it during the first festival too!
Permalink Reply by Tara Petite on January 28, 2012 at 1:39am Great idea! We are well-rooted/tethered here in Suburbia (MD), but have Ecuador on our dream list. I'd love to hear from people that made a transition to a more fruit-friendly climate with kids. :-)
Permalink Reply by durianrider on January 29, 2012 at 12:16am Thailand is my pic. Costa Rica is pretty nice too but doesnt have the fruit culture like Thailand IMHO.
Thailand is the cheapest and easiest place on earth if your a full blown fruit lover IMHO. Chanthaburi. You can rent a condo for 40$ a month.
Permalink Reply by Tara Petite on January 29, 2012 at 12:49am Have you been to Ecuador? I hear the climate (away from the coast) is milder and less humid. Thailand seems great, but it's sooo far (from the US, anyway)... airfare could get really pricey with a family of five... unless we just never came back! :-)
Permalink Reply by durianrider on January 29, 2012 at 1:05am I havent been to Ecuador but my friends that have been there AND then come to Thailand are like 'MAN! THAILAND PEELS ECUADOR!'.
Lots safer, lots cheaper, lots more fruit and vego culture.
Remember that in the old days people used to be on a boat in big waves for 3 MONTHS from NY to Singapore to trade spices. Now we can eat melon for breakfast in LA and Durian for dinner in Bangkok in the same day lol!
Im off to get my daily 2hour massage (8$US) shortly. I will be sending warm sunny vibes your way. ;)
Permalink Reply by Tara Petite on January 29, 2012 at 2:01am I think the closest we'll get to Thailand anytime soon is cracking open the imported Thai coconuts we have in the fridge. At least I get them wholesale... even if they have spent a couple weeks traveling the world before they get to me. :-)
Daily 2 hour massage? I'm living on Planet Parenthood right now, where massages are $100/hour and if we spent two hours a day on getting them, we'd be broke and over-scheduled. LOL Enjoy!
Permalink Reply by durianrider on January 29, 2012 at 3:04am Hate to sound like a downer but those Thai coconuts are treated in some nasty chems. Once you have a fresh local one you will see what I mean. I cant even drink those imported Thai nuts. They are horrendous lol!
2 hour massage here is 8$. Sometimes I only get an hour though.
Permalink Reply by Tara Petite on January 29, 2012 at 7:53pm Ya, we know... but sometimes you take what you can get... there are no fresh local coconuts in Maryland, so choose to live on the edge, indulging in chemical-laden coconuts now and then... We've never had the good stuff, so we don't know any better! LOL :-)
Permalink Reply by Jason Kvestad on February 20, 2012 at 10:06pm I'd enjoy an organized open discussion if nothing more, lately i've been leaning towards Hawaii. We'll see what happens :)
